Hair and beauty Inspiration

A series of images i found in a book in the library about creative make up and i found all the information and images really inventive and showed me inspiration for different ideas.

I choose this one as it looked the most like Elizabethan make up and hair, but in a contemporary style with it being dyed a really dark red and the curls are looser and pulled further forward. I really like how the paleness of the body and face make the hair stand out so much.

Page:104-105

This one i chose, because of the crimped hair and it reminded me of that era, but slightly 70s to, as
it is long and the model looks so tanned and natural. I like crimping and i think i would like to do it more, as it makes the hair higher, bigger and easier to use.

A beauty editorial make up, but i love the pale makeup and how the hair covers most of the face and round it, to shape it. The hair does remind me of Elizabethan, but a modern feel to it, to me more old hollywood glamour, with the red lips, and the short curled over fringe. I want to practice to do that as well, to get more of a skill in it and as a want a contemporary style, i could include that in the experimentation.

I found two contemporary designs that i also want to look at practicing, the first one is more Victorian and to me it looks organic, with it reminding me of winding trees and plants, with all the plaits combined into curls, and i want to try something with all the curls over the ears and plaits around the head, like a crown.

The second is a more full of accessories, which are flowers, and the hair is slicked back, but what it reminded me of was the flowers adorning the hair, like in the Elizabethan era. Even in the pose in the photoshoot reminds me of the portraits of that time. I would like to try something like this as well, because i like the more contemporary style, as you can be more creative and even use inspiration from that era as well, create something new.

Inspirational Hairstyles for new up and coming designers catwalk show

Orlando Pita haarstylist: I have looked at contemporary hairstyles here, for the up and coming designers catwalk show and these are some inspiration to get me started first i want to explore the big height and body.

This hair gives me inspiration, as the curls, do remind me of Elizabethan hair, but could work well with bold patterns and colours. I would not do every curl as it would take ages and you would have to have a lot of hair to make the body that shape and height. It has so much texture and i really like that when hair makes such a bold statement.

Big HairThis reminds me of a more 70s vibe, with the flat top and the big bodied hair at the bottom as it goes down, but this does look like it has been crimped a lot and backcombed, which is what i think i would do well in experimenting on.

Big HairI dont think i could create hair this big and with that many curls, but is a good starting point of how i would get a idea and what i should experiment on doing. I like how the hair is pulled back on one side and the other side pulled to front over the shoulder, so that it shapes all around the face. It being flat on top does remind me of the 70s again, which is quite popular at the moment. I think this look could pull off any colour and patterns, because it is so big anf bold, its self and could work on any hair colour as well.

Big HairHas a Elizabethan feel with how high and the shape, but more modern and reminds me of a tribal look, with it messy and the mohawk like style. I love how it comes forward over the head like that. But with this hair, i think a red, white, black or brown colours would work best, so not as good with bold patterns, but it depends on what the clothes will be. The height and body would make up for it though and how contemporary and punk like it looks.

contemporary Elizabethan Hair Designs

For this design i want to roll the hair back at the front with a ratt, then the hair in loose curls, in front of the ears. So it is a contemporary design, but based on a Elizabethan hair style.

This design is more Elizabethan, but the curls hanging down from where it is rolled over, makes it look modern and even bridal hair. The bun is just something i want to practice doing and it is Elizabethan, so i wasnt sure, if i wanted to do it, on my contemporary idea. Around the sides and on top, would be tight curls all around, to see if it would work.

Contemporary Elizabethan Hair Practice

For my lesson i practiced a design for the Elizabethan hair, and the design i want to do is more contemporary version of that hairstyle, as i want to show what it would look like today. I have used some the techniques that i have learnt how to do and incorporated that as what they would have done in that era.

First i did crimp the hair and backcomb, so it was easy to handle and to make the hairstyle that i wanted.

The hair looks slightly like bridal hair, which is modern, but the curls i wanted to look more like the Elizabethan, but more wavy, and less tight curls.
At the back i put the hair up, by curling the hair, then doing pin curls secured by pins, which makes it looks like bridal hair, but the curls are looser than Elizabethan hair.
By securing the front i used pins again, but it was curled over like that by a ratt, where i backcombed the hair, so that it rolled over like that.

Overall i think that it went well as a practice and showed different styles, that i could use in my design. I think the front part needs work to get slightly neater, and the curls i need to practice more.

Elizabethan Portraits

In this image i think that the hair is big and full of accessories that make it stand out. The colour is really Elizabethan, but what i don't like is that the hair line is so far back, as they shaved the hair at the forehead hair line, so that it was further back. The colour is more of a strawberry blonde, which makes the skin look even paler. The shape is more rounded, then heart shaped and they would have used padding to keep it at a high length

elizabethan-jewellry-skinThis one looks different as the hair is not curly, but straight and in a heart shape, that was also very popular to women in that era. These accessories in the hair, make it stand out more and show her wealth. The brown colour is there, instead of red or strawberry blonde, but i don't like the shape, and that the hair is not curly or crimped, as that adds more texture.

Portrait of an Elizabethan Woman, 1600. Detail. Rogier Van der WeydenMost of the hair is down in this one behind the ears. Pearls are put into it, which was the most popular to have in it. i like how the curls are slightly down the forehead than most of the portraits, and i would like to incorporate that in my own design, but a more contemporary one, with the curls slightly more at the front of the ears.

Another design that i have not seen done before, with ribbons braided into the hair at the back. I don't really like this one as much, because of the way it is so far back and the hair looks to tight against the head, as i prefer to have some of it done, with more depth and volume. The flowers stand out and much it look romantic. It does remind me of the renaissance period still, with the hair braided and all the ribbon, even the hair colour.

ENGLISH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1595-1605 PORTRAIT OF A LADY, TRADITIONALLY IDENTIFIED AS CATHERINE, COUNTESS OF NOTTINGHAM, BUT MORE PROBABLY ONE OF THE COUNTESS OF NOTTINGHAM'S DAUGHTERS, FULL-LENGTH, IN A BLACK SILK VELVET DRESS EMBROIDERED WITH SILVER, WITH A PEARL AND DIAMOND NECKLACE, A TEN POINTED STAR DIAMOND BROOCH AND ARCADES OF PEARLS IN HER HAIR, HOLDING A FAN IN HER RIGHT HAND AND WITH ROSES WITH HER LEFT--Christie's, 2011: I like this one the most,as it is so high and the aaccessories are what i haven't seen before, as they fill most of the hair. The colour is different also, which is a shade of brown, instead of the red that was most wanted. It does remind me of a contemporary design like the beehive,

Contemporary Elizabethan Hair Inspiration

These are contemporary Elizabethan hairstyles that i have found and i like them, because they are all different, and messy, which is what makes them modern.

A crimped updo - love it !!: A 80s look here, but crimping is what was done in the Elizabethan era as well, but the mess of it, is modern, but i like the rounded shape a the top, like a heart, is more like it, then the others, by pulling pieces of hair out and around the hair, gives it more texture and you can see the crimping more.

When i look at these i see a modern look, and kind of fantasy, the reason i could think of it being a Elizabethan is the hair that is up high on each side of the head. I like the way it is alien, like but reminding me of the era, with the plaits and high hair.

I think of candyfloss when i look at this image, but the pulled back and high up hair, makes me think of that and the 16th century, but with it being pink and not is neat, it is modern. I like the co,our as it brings out the white of the background and her complexion

Thom BrowneLooking at this style there is a clown like look to it, and slightly scary, but the outfit suggests it being of the Elizabethan era, which is what it reminded me of, The high maybe more goth with the white and it being dark as well. but the way the hair is messy, instead of intricate and neat, makes it contemporary.

Crimping/Backcombing

Today i learnt how to do crimping, which i thought was easy, using a hot crimper instead of hair straighteners. I liked doing it, but to me it as a slow process. Then i backcombed it, so then i could put a ratt in it, which is tights with cotton, or filling that is used in pillows, which is a type of fabric.

Then wrapping the hair around it, to put against the head, i done that both sides, to create a rounded shape, i thought it was good and was easy to get the hang of. But what i learnt new most of all was how to put a ratt in, and that i had never heard or seen it before, and also how to backcomb properly. It give me good ideas, as well of what to do with the Elizabethan inspired hairstyle.

Hair Experimentation

I have experimented with different styles on the Kate head, but i need to have more practice, as it wasnt easy to do, as i have not done it before to someone else's hair, especially the french plait, i have never learnt how to do it. I like the first image as it shows the hair like its overlapping over one another and is a good start into Elizabethan hair. The other like is where they are bouffant at the front, like a Elizabethan style, which is just back combed then used grips to keep it up.

What i would improve is the plaits and how untidy i make them, and the general hair style i have created. Once i have learnt more i then can do it all the time, with no problem. I tried to curl the hair, but i seem to not be able to get the hang of it, even on my own hair as well. Next i want to experiment more with how to do crimping and curling it properly with straighteners and such.

Plaits/Buns and Ribbons in the Elizabethan era

In the Elizabethan era the type of people who had elaborate hairstyles and wigs were upper class, as they had time and money to do so. The hair was crimped, plaited, and had accessories put into them, which would take time, for you or someone to do for you.

Fashion Week: Thom Browne Spring/Summer 2014When looking at Elizabethan portraits, i can see that they used pearls, gems, and head dresses, and even hat like accessories, that they adorned. The hair style usually matched what the woman had on her head, such as a headdress. The contemporary versions that have been done and inspired by are usually in the make up artists way of thinking and what they want to achieve, but

Fashion Week: Thom Browne Spring/Summer 2014

I have found a inspiring images in Thom Browne's Spring/summer 2014 collection, in the makeup it is contemporary, but when you look at how the hair is big, but very messy and full of product, it does remind you of Elizabethan, but done in way where no accessories are needed or headdresses, as it stands out enough and made in his image of what they would look like today.

When i look at it i think that they don't have a similarity from that era to now, as the artist and designer have made it in their own way and what stands out to them, but i do see the concept of where it is coming from.

Fashion Week: Thom Browne Spring/Summer 2014To me it is quite scary, but interesting the way it is scary and messy, but somehow elegant and stunning at the same time.

Runway-Inspired: Braids
Hair that is a modern looking Elizabethan style that have plaits and is long, but
what makes them look modern is that the hair is straight, got a shine to it, so it looks wet, to do with lots of products in it, also it doesn't have height to it or accessories taking over the whole hair. The hair colour is modern, because there is all types of hair colour here, then in that era, as it doesn't matter now what class you are in.

What i like about it though, is they do look the same, but the plaits are in a different place each time and look so difficult, but are easy for anyone to do.

This reminds me of a Elizabethan portrait, with the position she is in and the look on her face, is serious and set. The hair is all put up with plaits surrounding the front, on top. This looks more like the style they would have had, but the hair colour is to dark and doesn't show the hairline very far back, which is how they wore it in that era and which was popular.

I like the hair put up in plaits,as it stands out then it just being straight and it looks like she has short hair from the side and front.

This work was in How to spend it the magazine and is Baroque style and are photographed by Andrew Yee, who is a fashion photographer. The hair is done by James O'Riley, and the images do look like renaissance paintings, which is another reason why i like it so much.

These portraits depict the Elizabethan's hair is frizzy and crimped at the front and then up up at the back with a headdress on top. The hair its self is very far back, as they shaved the top of the hair line, as it showed wealth and desire, but to me i don't like it, but i can see why they done it. The modern styles though have a slight inspiration from this, but more messy and sleeker.

The hair here is depicted a lot nicer i think, as it is frizzy and crimped, but not to much and over the top like some. The accessories in it make it look nice. This reminds me a modern look that you could have now, but without the hat.

The hairstyle i did in lesson and its the first time i have done it on something other than my own hair and it felt weird, because it is difficult not on your own, which i do struggle with anyway.

When it came to the french plait, i couldn't get the hang of it at all, because i have never done it before and gradually i started to kind of know what to do. The bun was easy, but you could see right through it of how it was done, but i could work on that.

I liked doing it, as it good to know what the Elizabethan done and start to get a idea of how to do it.
